The 13 best PS5 DLC expansions and free updates
For this list, the TrueTrophies team of Editor Kes and Staff Writers Lee and Sean pooled their collective experience playing PS5 and PS4 DLC to bring you a list of only the very best game expansions. In the ranked list below, we've made sure to clarify any special game releases that include the DLC so you don't miss out on some great content during the next PS Store sale. While compiling this list, we tried to steer clear of any DLC that got a standalone release, as our definition of the best DLC is that it expands on the game you already have. That's why you won't find Uncharted The Lost Legacy or The Last of Us Left Behind on here, even though they're both pretty good. As for the rest, check out the very best PS5 DLC below.
13. Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores
- These are the Horizon Forbidden West trophies
- Release Date: April 19, 2023
- Available as a premium DLC upgrade on the PS Store or included in Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition
12. Sonic Frontiers The Last Horizon
- These are the Sonic Frontiers trophies
- Release Date: September 28, 2023
- Available in a free update patch for Sonic Frontiers
11. Destiny 2 The Final Shape
- These are the Destiny 2 trophies
- Release Date: June 4, 2024
- Available as a paid expansion for Destiny 2
For once, we've got a story that really resonates with players on top of the usual showstopping setpieces we've come to expect. The Final Shape gives us a thrilling conclusion to the game's longest running narrative arc, and it did so without skimping on excellent gear and missions to embark on.
10. Cuphead The Delicious Last Course
- These are the Cuphead trophies
- Release Date: June 30, 2022
- Available as a premium DLC upgrade on the PS Store
9. Towerfall Dark World
- These are the Towerfall Ascension trophies
- Release Date: July 29, 2016
- Available as a premium DLC upgrade on the PS Store
8. Bloodborne The Old Hunters
- These are the Bloodborne trophies
- Release Date: November 24, 2015
- Available as a premium DLC upgrade on the PS Store
7. Marvel's Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps
- These are the Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered trophies
- Release Date: December 21, 2018
- Available as a premium DLC upgrade on PS4, in Marvel's Spider-Man Game of the Year Edition (PS4), or as part of Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (PS5)
6. Mass Effect 3 Citadel
- These are the Mass Effect 3 trophies
- Release Date: March 5, 2013
- Available as part of the upgraded Mass Effect Legendary Edition
The story takes place while the Reaper invasion is still ongoing, allowing you to mingle with all your crew mates from all three games, go on an over-the-top adventure, come face-to-face with a clone of yourself, and pursue your desired romance. Play this DLC just before the end game, as it serves as a happy moment celebrating the entire cast and past adventures before we submit to the gritty ending.
5. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intermission
- These are the Final Fantasy VII Remake trophies
- Release Date: July 10, 2021
- Available as part of the PS5 upgrade Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Her DLC adventure's pretty fun too — it brings back a reworked Fort Condor minigame! If you're thinking about checking out the sequel Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, I also recommend playing through Intergrade. A lot of Yuffie's underlying motivation is established here and could be a little hard to get a read on in Rebirth without that vital intel!
4. God of War Ragnarok Valhalla
- These are the God of War Ragnarok Valhalla trophies (standalone)
- Release Date: December 12, 2023
- Available in a free update patch for the base game
It may be a free update, but it really is unreasonably good. A challenging rogue-like dungeon with some genuinely wonderful bonus story beats? Frankly, Sony could've easily charged money for this.
3. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty
- These are the Cyberpunk 2077 trophies
- Release Date: September 26, 2023
- Available as a premium DLC upgrade on the PS Store (only on PS5)
Alongside many fixes and reworks for the considerably flawed RPG elements of the original Cyberpunk 2077 release, Phantom Liberty offers a fresh set of endings for the player to explore as V makes one last-ditch attempt to rid the Relic from their mind without dying in the process. Their success, of course, depends on your choices, and they're some of the most intriguingly complex choices you'll make across the entire Cyberpunk 2077 experience.
2. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt — Blood and Wine
- These are those The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt trophies
- Release Date: May 31, 2016
- Available as a premium DLC upgrade on the PS Store or included in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Complete Edition
You'll love the intrigue of Toussaint, one of the few areas of The Witcher's world unscathed by the war, and you'll of course get to make some suitably huge decisions on your journey. It's the best DLC on PS5, and an absolute must for Witcher fans.
1. Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
- These are those Elden Ring trophies
- Release Date: June 21, 2024
- Available as a premium DLC upgrade on the PS Store
No matter what level you are upon starting Shadow of the Erdtree, you'll find yourself stripped of your power and your cheap tricks and forced into a gauntlet of hair-raising battles. It's equal parts thrilling and brutal, and most importantly, it brings out the very best of what we already love about Elden Ring. While few players might actually beat it, that doesn't stop it from being a brilliant expansion to one of the best PS5 games ever released.
That's our list! Some of the best PS5 games around have some excellent DLC, and we've tried to list them all here. That said, were there any favorites of yours that we missed? If so, let us know down in the comments below!
