Overview[]
The events of the game take place 25 years after Captain Falcon and Dr. Stewart (and presumably Samurai Goroh and Pico as well) "piloted their way to fame," which seems to imply it is 25 years after the events of the SNES game.
There are 10 new playable pilots to choose from, as the original 30 from the Main Universe are absent from the game.
However, some of the Maximum Velocity pilots contain references to the older pilots, such as Kent Akechi and Blitz Wagner. Kent claims to be the blood relative of Captain Falcon (Nintendo Power altered this to be a direct claim of "son"), and Dr. Stewart allegedly designed Blitz Wagner's Silver Thunder (Nintendo Power is the only source that mentions this).
Plot[]
While the game has no actual story mode, there is a backstory provided within the manual.
A quarter of century after the likes of Captain Falcon and Dr. Stewart have "piloted their way to fame," they have become regarded as legendary pilots. Although still regarded as a dangerous sport with some opposition, a new generation of pilots have emerged, looking to continue the legacy of F-Zero.
Although space travel had opened up new horizons in factors such as trading, it also left merchants vulnerable to attacks from space pirates. Rather than using up all of their wealth in mass defense, they instead focused on their individual territories. As a result of what is described as conservative business practices, space pilots lost their jobs, turning to F-Zero as a way to make money and achieve fame.
